A TALK on the history of water was given to support the town mayor's charities.

Essex University history lecturer Patrick Denney gave a talk to residents in Colchester called To Fetch a Pail Of Water.

It covered every aspect of water, from drinking to the use of privvies. It also focussed on the history of Jumbo, the famous water tower.

Sir Bob Russell was amongst the audience as well as mayor and mayoress Gerard and Beverley Oxford.

Refreshments were provided by Colchester Samaritans and all proceeds will go to the mayor's chosen charities.

They include Chavasse House, Colchester Guide Dogs, St Helena Hospice, Samaritans of Colchester, Tendring and Suffolk Borders, and the Injured Jockeys Fund.
