ARSONISTS torched two cars in separate fires within minutes in a “vile” wrecking spree.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service were called to Sheering Walk off Monkwick Avenue in Colchester after reports a Volkswagen Golf was on fire.

Officers managed to extinguish the fire within half an hour of arriving at 11.20pm, but the car was destroyed in the blaze.

The owner of the Golf was at home at the time of the fire and was told about it when a concerned neighbour rushed to his door.

“The car had been parked up for about three hours, and I heard banging on the door which was my neighbour,” said the car owner who asked to remain anonymous.

“Then I saw the flames.

“It was a modified Volkswagen Golf GTI.

“There is nothing left of the interior and the engine is pretty much gone, as well.

“It is definitely a write off.

“I do like my cars and just when you find the right one it gets ruined through no fault of my own.”

The man said he was disgusted at what had happened and was gearing up for discussions with his insurance company.

Melted - the bodywork of the Volkswagen was badly damaged

He said: “The nicest possible word I could use for the people who did it is that they are vile.”

Just two minutes after the fire in Sheering Walk was reported to officers , another car was reported to be ablaze approximately half a mile away in Adelaide Drive.

By the time crews arrived on the scene residents had managed to put the blaze out but the car - a Honda - had been badly damaged.

Last month, a series of cars had their tyres slashed by yobs armed with a Stanley knife in nearby Gurdon Road.

The fire service have passed details of both of the latest incidents to Essex Police.
