A POPULAR pub which had an uncertain future is set for a massive overhaul after being taken over by new owners.

Concerns for the Bricklayers, in Bergholt Road, Colchester, were raised in July when its long-standing landlords opted not to renew the lease on the Adnams Brewery-owned pub.

But the Gazette can now exclusively reveal the popular spot has been snapped up by the Harwich-based Flying Trade Group for an undisclosed sum.

The firm - which is in the midst of completing a multi-million pound overhaul and extension of The George Hotel, in Colchester High Street - is planning a significant overhaul.

Bosses are promising specialist real ales and guest ales, as well as “hearty traditional food”, will be at the heart of their plans.

The pub will now close for two weeks, while cleaning and refurbishment work is carried out.

It will re-open to the public on Friday, January 26, at 6pm.

Suki Dulai, chief executive officer of Flying Trade Group, said “We are delighted to bring the Bricklayers into our portfolio.

“Our aim is to offer specialist real ale along with ever changing guest beers offering more choice to our customers.”

He added: “We continue to invest heavily in Colchester with The George project along with St Nicholas House and One Castle Park, with an emphasis on making the most of the town’s rich history."

The company has an annual turnover of more than £100 million and employs more than 1,400 people.
