A PURLEIGH aerodrome is working towards building a permanent exhibition focusing on the role of women in the First World War.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, in Hackman’s Lane, believe the exhibition will help inform people of all ages of the pivotal role women played during the war.

The display will be a permanent feature at the site, and has been made possible after securing a grant from Essex & Suffolk Water.

Ian Flint, CEO of the airfield, said: “We are always seeking new ways to interest and inform people, of all ages, on the Air Campaign during the First World War.

“We are delighted to receive this funding as it means we can install a new permanent exhibition.

“This unique heritage attraction will focus on the roles ow omen in the early 20th century, and the immeasurable impact of their actions during the Great War, both at Stow Maries and other locations.”

The aerodrome has been awarded a £1,000 grant from the Essex & Suffolk Water Community Fund.

The fund, managed by Essex Community Foundation (ECF), handed out grants totalling £9,000 to seven organisations across the East of England.

Michael Page, external communications consultant for Essex & Suffolk Water, said: “We strive to make a positive contribution to the communities that we serve on a daily basis, and our long-standing partnership with Essex Community Foundation is one of the ways we endeavour to this.

“We are very proud to have awarded grants to seven fantastic organisations and I hope that this support will give them a real boost to help them continue their inspiring and much needed work.”

The grant applications were considered by an employee committee and all projects supported are related to either the environment, health and wellbeing or providing community support.
