A FARM owner is hoping his flying team is chosen to undertake an epic journey from Argentina to America in a vintage aeroplane.

Martin Gosling, who owns Stones Farm in Wickham St Paul, has more than 40 years flying experience and along with his German teammate Michael Wingenroth, has made it onto a shortlist of teams aiming to take part in the six-week flight next year.

The 15 eventually chosen will be required to dismantle their planes and have them shipped to Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the southern most city in the world Once there, the planes will be resembled and the pilots will then embark on a 9,200 mile journey to Florida starting on March 1.

The pilots will have to fly to a designated place each day and will be aiming to finish their voyage at the Sun and Fun event in Florida on April 15.

Martin, 73, has previously won the British Air Racing Championship in consecutive years and along with Michael is now doing all he can to ensure they will be one of the 15 teams selected by the organisers of the event, Prepare 2 go. He said: “It’s going to be a real scramble now.

“We have to submit videos explaining our background, who we are and why we want to go on the journey.

“Between us, we have flown around five different continents. Going on the journey would be like tackling the final frontier and mean we have flown over them all.

“We have lots of experience between us. Michael has flown solo around Australia and I have around 4,500 flying hours behind me.

“We call ourselves the A-team.

“It’s a mix of British sense of humour and German efficiency.”

The final decision on which teams will be selected to take part in the adventure will be made on December 1 before the next challenge begins.

Martin added: “We need to be promoting ourselves as much as we can to make sure we get chosen.”

The 15 vintage aircraft will all have been built in the early 1900s and follow in the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the Twenties.
