THESE are the first pictures of how a multi-million pound sportsplex could look in north Colchester.

As part of the Northern Gateway plans, Colchester Rugby Club would move from its existing site in Mill Road and would join archery, cycling, horse riding, tennis clubs.

American Football side, Colchester Gladiators, could also make the site its new home.

The plans were put on show to the public in the first of a series of consultation events.

Initial proposals show space for up to two artificial pitches and a number of traditional grass pitches.

The scheme will be funded by the sale of the Colchester Council-owned Mill Road rugby club as well as grant cash from Sport England.

Paul Smith, leader of Colchester Council, said the new site should be ready at the start of the 2019/20 sports season.

He added: “This is the biggest sports project to be undertaken in Colchester since Leisure World opened 30 years ago.

“It is a major enhancement of sport facilities in Colchester and it will be a big improvement for the rugby club and the cycling facilities which are coming are very exciting.”

The council has bid for funding from both Sport England and South East Local Enterprise Partnership, which is understood to have scored the project highly.

The plans are available to view at northerngatewaycolchester.co.uk or at Camulos Academy, off Northern Approach, today and tomorrow between 9am- and 1.30pm, and at Colchester Library between 9am and 5pm for a week from Thursday.
