Thousands of visitors descended on Witham’s annual puppet festival as live acts lined the streets.

The International Puppet Festival, organised by Witham Town Council. celebrated its 18th year on Saturday with an Under the Sea theme.

Unusual sea creatures and maritime mayhem swarmed the town centre with more than 20 live acts performing and Newland Street closed for the day to allow performers and crowds to gather safely.

Community officer Pauline Merrit said: “We are really pleased and all had a fabulous day.

“The crowds were definitely up from last year, and the under the sea theme seemed to work very well.

“It seems to be growing more and more popular by the year and has a feel good family atmosphere.

“It is an event that offers something for children and adults alike, and brings people together to enjoy the town. It has become one of the highlights of the year.”
