THE number of people claiming job seeker’s allowance in Colchester has dropped by 20.

Figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions yesterday showed 1,370 people are claimed the benefit last month in the borough.

It is a decrease of 20 in July.

Kate Bloom, Job Centre plus senior regional manager for Essex said the decrease could be down to seasonal working.

It means there could be rise when the September figures are released in four weeks’ time.

She said: “In the grand scheme of things, it isn’t a significant decrease so there is nothing large at work here.

“It could be that people have found seasonal work, say in Clacton, which relies on the summer season and that may be seen in the figures next month.”

Mrs Bloom also said the Job Centre is set to launch recruitment campaigns for a number of high street giants in the run up to Christmas, such as Toys ‘R’ Us and Debenhams.
