A DRINK driver ploughed into two parked cars before being hauled to the ground by have-a-go heroes as he tried to escape the scene.

Kevin Blair, 31, was spotted by a resident swerving his Honda Civic across Kensington Road, Colchester.

Blair, who had drunk while celebrating his son’s birth, attempted to park at speed, smashing into a car.

Kathy Wilson, prosecuting at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday, said: “The witness saw a passenger get out of the vehicle, look at the damage and laugh, and saw the other three people in the vehicle laugh.

“The vehicle drove off, there were no attempts to leave a note or identify the owner of the vehicle.”

Later on that day the same car was seen by another witness driving along Drury Road, Colchester, crashing into a parked new white Vauxhall and pushing it eight metres into a wall.

Mrs Wilson added: “The witness and other members of the public went over to the defendant, saw him trying to get out of the vehicle via the passenger door and saw an empty beer can in the car.

“The defendant made a half-hearted effort to leave the scene, but was detained by members of the pubic until the police arrived.

“At the police station he was aggressive with officers and refused to provide a sample of breath.“He was described as being verbally aggressive throughout the procedure.”

Blair, of Chalfont Road, Colchester, admitted charges of driving while unfit through drink, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and failing to report an accident.

Probation services interviewed Blair, who has eight previous convictions for 16 offences.

They found he had been a heavy drinker until six years ago when he was hit by a car and suffered brain damage.

Blair alleges on the day of the incident he had too much to drink while at a friend’s house celebrating the birth of his son.

Stephen Moriaty, mitigating, said: “He should be given full credit for his guilty plea.

“Although he cannot remember some aspects of it, he hasn’t wished to play the system.“He is very surprised at his behaviour.”

Magistrates handed Blair a community order lasting 12 months, requiring 60 hours of unpaid work and 25 days rehabilitation activity requirement. He was banned from the roads for 36 months and ordered to pay £170 in fines and court costs.
