THE Liberal Democrats have chosen their candidate for an upcoming by-election called after a councillor resigned for personal reasons.

Sam McCarty, 22, has been selected as the Lib Dem choice for Shrub End after Karen Chaplin stepped down from Colchester Council last month.

Ms Chaplin (Lib Dem) was elected during the all-out borough council elections last year.

Mr McCarthy, who is a former youth football coach, said he has been impressed by work done by his colleagues in the area.

He said: "As a Shrub End resident living on Churchill Gate for over a decade, I have witnessed the fantastic work Shrub End Liberal Democrat councillors have done.

"Whether it is setting up the Shrub End litter warriors or chasing up Conservative Essex County Council on much needed road repairs, I am standing in this election to continue this great record.

"Coming from a retail background, I am listening to many people about their thoughts and concerns about Shrub End and Colchester every day.

"If I am elected, I will continue to do just that.

"Having gone to school at Alderman Blaxill I have never been quiet about the importance of keeping the school open which is why I passionately support Lyn Barton’s campaign to get a new school opened on the site."

Ms Barton, current Lib Dem councillor for the area said: "I am delighted Sam is standing for the Liberal Democrats in the by-election.

"His passion for the ward and his involvement in the local community through for instance teaching youth football on Abbey Fields make him the best choice for Shrub End."

Parties have until Thursday, August 10 to select their candidates and the names of the would-be councillors will be released the next day.

Polling will take place on Thursday, September 7.
