A YOUNG artist’s colourful healthy eating picture has carried away first prize in a shopping bag design competition.

Bailey Wappler, 7, of St. Luke’s C of E Primary School, was awarded the coveted prize as well as £500 for his school and a £25 Tesco gift card for himself at the store in Tiptree.

His picture of bright fruit and vegetables with the message that ‘It’s cool to be healthy’ has been transferred onto thousands of limited edition hessian bags which are being given away free in the store on Church Road.

His prize and a hessian bag featuring his winning design were presented to him by Tesco store manager Jonathan Bale during a school assembly.

The competition was organised by Tesco as part of its commitment to encourage community involvement. More than 200 pupils from primary schools across Tiptree took part in the competition which asked children to draw a picture of their interpretation of healthy eating.

Tesco store manager Jonathan Bale said: “Bailey’s bright and colourful design really stood out when we were choosing a winner from the many entries we received and I am sure customers will enjoy using the bags with Baileys design printed onto them.”

Ms Clare Walker, acting head teacher at St Luke’s C of E Primary School, said: “It is with great delight that Bailey won the overall competition and the bag is absolutely fantastic. The design is clear and eye- catching, as well as sending out a healthy eating message.

“The school are incredibly grateful to also receive a cheque towards school improvement as part of the competition.”
