ROTARIANS handed more than £9,000 to Colchester Samaritans after a year-long fundraising campaign.

The Rotary Club of Colchester Forum raised money for the lifesaving group, as well as Age Concern, Beacon House and East Anglia's Children's Hospices throughout the year with a variety events including concerts, a sleep out in Castle Park and even a senior bus pass challenge where pensioners had to travel as far as possible using just their bus passes and no money.

Colchester Samaritans received £9,300 thanks to the club and fundraising co-ordinator Karen Thompson said: "I was absolutely amazed at the amount the Rotary club has raised for us.

"I couldn’t believe the figures printed on the cheque.

"This will go a long way to help in the continued running of the branch."

Club president Ray Gamble said: “We are delighted to have supported Colchester Samaritans.

"The local branch, staffed entirely by volunteers, has been running continuously in the town for more than 50 years - 24 hours a day, seven days a week - offering a safe place for people to talk.

"They provide emotional support to anyone in crisis, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide.

"They should be applauded and Rotary Forum is proud to have helped by raising funds and awareness."
