PLANS to redraw ward boundaries in Tendring are set to go before Parliament for approval.

The Boundary Commission has completed its review of Tendring Council and has recommended reducing the number of councillors from 60 to 48 with new ward boundaries drawn up.

The commission has made a number of changes to its original proposal following a consultation.

The changes include moving away from having three councillors in Clacton's Pier Ward in favour of one councillor alongside two in the town's St James Ward.

It has also changed its view of a Southcliff Ward with two councillors in favour of an Eastcliff Ward and a St Paul’s Ward with one councillor each.

Elsewhere instead of one large St Osyth and Little Clacton Ward with three Councillors the commission has opted for a Little Clacton Ward with one and St Osyth Ward with two councillors.

In the west of the district there will no longer be a three-councillor Ardleigh, Alresford and Elmstead Ward. The final recommendation is for an Alresford and Elmstead Ward with two councillors and an Ardleigh and Little Bromley Ward with one.

Paul Honeywood, chairman of the council's Electoral Review Working Party, said he is pleased with the outcome of the consultation.

“The commission has taken on board many of the comments made and the final recommendations better reflect local community ties,” he said.

“In fact the proposals have changed a fair bit to include the views expressed.

“Once agreed by Parliament, the council will be working towards putting the new arrangements in place ready for the Tendring Council elections in 2019.”

The public consultation on the draft recommendations closed and a response was agreed by the council at its meeting in May.
