A COMMUNITY garden project in Jaywick has celebrated another year of growth.

Dig4Jaywick was set up six years ago on land at the back of the Enterprise Centre in Lotus Way.

The area has now been transformed with a shelter, polytunnel, glasshouses, tool shed, flowering beds and plenty of produce - such as potatoes, beans, sweet peas, courgettes and onions - to show for it.

The group is marking its anniversary with an open day on July 26 from 1pm to 4pm.

Chairman Barry Shimell said Dig4Jaywick’s success is down to the volunteers and the support of the community and organisations.

“We have a project and garden to be really proud of and one which provides a quiet haven for people to come and join in our activities,” he said.

“What we need now is more volunteers to help us to continue to go from strength to strength and I urge people to come along to the open day and see what’s on offer.”

Paul Honeywood, Tendring Council’s cabinet member for housing and with special responsibility for Jaywick, said he is looking to the event.

“The group has done a tremendous job and provides an important facility for the community,” he added.

There will be a free barbecue at the open day along with a bee keeping workshop, writers’ circle workshop , Friends of Jaywick Martello Tower workshop and herbal balm demonstration.
