FIRE crews were called to 50 tonnes of hay alight in Witham.

Three crews from Braintree, Witham and Colchester were called to the blaze in Cressing Road at 5.58pm on Friday.

They worked through the night to extinguish the fire, which is thought to involve about 50 tonnes of hay.

When crews arrived they reported that the hay bales, which measure around 10m x 20m, were 100% alight.

At 9am on Saturday crews reported they were continuing tackle the fire, as well as dampen down the surrounding area to ensure it does not spread further.

The fire was extinguished by 5pm.

A spokesman said: "Crews have made the site safe and left it in the care of the owner.

"An investigation will take place to determine the cause of the fire."
