FUNDRAISERS stepped out under the stars for a ten mile walk to raise vital funds to provide a state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre.

More than 120 walkers, including men, women and dogs, took part in the ninth annual Starlight Walk.

Participants started off at PlayGolf in Bakers Lane, Colchester, before heading around London Road, Stanway, Southway, North Station and Bergholt Road, and then returning to the golf club.

Nicky Withycombe, one of the event organisers, is hoping to raise £10,000 for Colchester General Hospital’s Cancer Centre Campaign with proceeds from the walk and a glitzy ball in October.

She said: “As soon as people hear the word cancer they automatically want to help which is why we always have such a good turnout.

“We are also one of the only events which allow men to take part.

“Sometimes it is nice to do something with your husband, brother, friend or whoever else might be affected.

“Every year PlayGolf help us out for free - their support of the event is absolutely amazing.”

The Cancer Centre Campaign, which is backed by the Gazette, aims to bring all cancer services together at Colchester General Hospital. For more information, go to cohoc.org.uk.
