A DETERMINED electrician who rebuilt his life after his flat burned down has got into the regional finals of a trade competition.

Marc Dean, of Milton Road, Lawford, will have to impress judges at the East of England regional heat of Britain’s Top Tradesperson to secure his place as one of eight finalists from across the nation.

The winner of the competition will secure the national title along with a Toyota Proace or Hilux worth £32,000.

Marc, 40, said he hopes his honest approach and willingness to go the extra mile will help him to stand out.

He said: “Although I have only been working in the industry for a year, I am happy with what I have achieved and continue to achieve as I progress as an electrician.

“It’s safe to say I have had a tough five years.

“My house caught fire and burned down in 2012 and I couldn’t continue in my last job in 2012 due to succumbing to severe depression and anxiety as a result of these unfortunate circumstances.”

Marc was living in Trinity Court in Manningtree, when his flat burned down after a fire started in a faulty printer.

He said: “I felt low and unmotivated and it was only turning my focus to becoming an electrician that I started to feel hopeful again.

“I am proud of the service I provide and I look forward to taking part in the East of England regional final.”

The competition is run by Screwfix and aims to reward the most exceptional builders, electricians and plumbers in the country.

Graham Smith, Screwfix marketing director, said: “Being selected as a regional finalist highlights the great work that Marc is doing.

“Along with our other finalists, he has demonstrated a passion for the trade, a willingness to go the extra mile and to always leave customers satisfied.”
