THREE 30m high steel structures at an old power station tumbled to the ground yesterday when they were demolished in a controlled explosion.

Tilbury Power Station’s demolition reached another milestone with the third controlled explosive demolition on the site since last year.

Contractor Brown and Mason has been progressing well with the demolition and works have now been completed on the site of the former older ‘A’ station.

At 2pm yesterday the third explosion took place and brought down three of the four original steel structures known as precipitators eight, nine and ten.

These structures, each approximately 20m long, 15m wide and 30m high were used to clean the flue gases before they were released from the station chimney when the station was operational.

The explosion and collapse drew spectators eager to catch a glimpse of the demolition, with dust generated being cleared by road sweepers on neighbouring roads.

The other main structures, such as the chimneys, boiler house, turbine hall and bunker house are scheduled for explosive demolition later this year.

Further details on these milestones will be provided nearer the time. The complete demolition of the site is expected towards the end of 2018.
