THE popular Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be winging its way back to Clacton this summer for the town’s spectacular airshow.

The flight is a regular element of the popular air show and is a favourite for all ages – especially those with a connection to the Second World War.

The display, which will include the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane, is the latest to sign on the dotted line for both days of the Clacton Airshow which is being staged on August 24 and 25.

The aircraft are regularly seen at events commemorating the Second World War, on British State occasions such as the Trooping of the Colour and the Queen’s birthday celebrations.

The crews of the iconic planes have a full-time staff including an Officer Commander, 30 engineering tradesmen and an HQ staff operating out of RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of the Second World War and the Hurricane is one of the most classic fighters of all-time.

The Spitfire was produced in greater numbers than any other British combat aircraft and played a major role in achieving victory in the Second World War.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight joins the programme alongside the Tigers Parachute team and the Catalina.

The world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team the Red Arrows have also confirmed they will be part of the programme and will delight crowds by performing on both days.

Nigel Brown, Tendring Council’s communications manager, said it is always important to get the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on board with the aerial spectacle.

He said: “Whatever excitement the newer fighter jets and bombers bring to the crowds it is always a special moment when this particular display makes its fly past.

“It is especially nostalgic for those with any personal memories of the Second World War and many spectators turn out for the chance to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in all its glory.”
