A COUPLE have thanked “fearless” firefighters after a chip pan blaze completely destroyed their home and killed three pets.

The fire ripped through Darren and Nathalie Upsher’s home late on Friday night.

The pair’s two cats - Loki and Winston - and parrot were also killed in the house fire in Daniel Cole Road, Colchester.

Mr Upsher said: “Our world is upside down at the moment.

“The firefighters were absolutely great - fearless.

“They were here for a long time, easily until 1.30am, looking for hotspots.

"They couldn’t have done any more for us and we are so grateful.”

The 43-year-old said his wife, 42, was the only person at home when the fire started and she had bravely tried to fight the flames herself.

He added: “When she realised she couldn’t do anything, she went to try to save the pets but it was all too much by then. She was very brave but she had to get out.”

Mr Upsher had bought the parrot as a present to his wife as she recovered from a back operation six months ago.

He added: “I was out at the time but by the time I got back, Nat was already out and the guys were doing all they could inside.”

Mrs Upsher was treated at Colchester General Hospital for burns to her arms and chest. The couple have been staying at a hotel since the blaze.

Colchester Fire station manager Simon Dedham said: “Incidents like these show how dangerous it can be to leave cooking unattended.

“When the homeowner discovered the fire she attempted to extinguish it herself and as a result suffered injury.

“Our advice to people after discovering a fire is always to get out, stay out, and then call 999.

“Unfortunately a moment’s distraction has meant the house is completely destroyed by fire.”

Friends have rallied round the couple and more than £540 has already been raised by a crowdfunding appeal. Kind contributors have posted messages of support.

Ruth Kaylor said: “So very sorry for your loss of the babies and your home.

“Very thankful you aren’t hurt too bad. I loved Loki and Winston like my own too.”

Another friend, Leigh Lush, added: “Shocked, and saddened to see what has happened.

“Glad you and your wife are safe and well, I wish you all the best in rebuilding your home.”
