A HERD of cattle has taken up residency in one of Colchester's largest parks.

The Red Poll cows have been introduced to their new home at High Woods Country Park to help maintain the diversity of wildlife.

A native breed from the Legacy Grazing Herd, they will help to control the growth of grass which in turn will benefit flowers, insects, birds and the mammals that depend on them.

Simon Walsh, the Essex county councillor responsible for the environment, said: “We are delighted to be adding High Woods to our growing list of conservation grazing sites.

"We hope visitors will enjoy the sight of the cattle and we have already had a fantastic response from residents who would like to volunteer as cattle lookers."

The Gazette has contacted Essex County Council to see if the advice for dog-walkers using the park will change.

As well as being one of Colchester’s beauty spots, the county park is significant for nature conservation.

With a combination of marshy areas, hayfields and scrubland, High Woods provides the perfect habitat for thousands of wildlife.

It has also held the prestigious Green Flag Award since 2004.

Colchester Council is working in partnership with Essex County Council’s place services to deliver conservation grazing.
