HELPFUL handymen and women have been praised for their community spirit.

Darkins Supply Store in Sible Hedingham has been voted in as a 'hidden gem' in the district.

The family-run shop in Swan Street has been hailed an integral part of village life, and is a goldmine for DIY supplies.

One resident said: "Darkins gets my vote, anything you need they always have it.

"They can't help you enough and don't hesitate to carry heavy items to your car."

Another resident said the store was the best reason to live in Sible Hedingham.

The 'go to' place for household items stocks everything from animal feed to coal, and they also do key cutting.

Katherine Palmer, Gazette reporter, and Braintree Council have been hunting down 'hidden gems' as part of the #BDHiddenGems campaign.

Miss Palmer said: "Nothing says community spirit like an old fashioned DIY store, and residents are raving about how dedicated the staff are to lending a helping hand.

"I can't quite get my head around the range of stock, they make someone's day on a regular basis and I imagine they have saved a lot of hairy situations.

"Darkins is what the hidden gems campaign represents- a friendly face in the community, showing dedication and a love for helping others.

"The village without Darkins is unimaginable."

The store, which has been open since the 60s, is also well-know for supporting local charities, including the Smile of Arran Trust.
