WAITERS offered speedy service as they took part in an annual charity fundraiser.

Students and staff at Essex University’s Wivenhoe House and the Edge Hotel School took part in the annual National Waiters’ Day Race, which is now in its fifth year.

The event is held at the same time across the country and highlights the skills of front of house staff as well as the career opportunities in the industry.

Entrants balanced loaded trays of glasses and bottles and made a sprint for the line.

Mariya Kovacheva was named the winner.

Wivenhoe House general manager Oliver Brown said: “A career in hospitality means no two days are ever the same.

“Racing for charity is just another example of how different each day can be.

“We are proud to support the National Waiters’ Day Race and look forward to this celebration of this wonderful industry.”

Founder of the event Fred Sirieix, who is now the star of Channel Four hit First Dates, said: “It’s essential we promote the ocean of career opportunities hospitality has to offer, celebrate the hard work of front of house professionals, and encourage more people to begin great careers in hospitality.

“There has never been a more exciting time to join this special industry.”
