COLCHESTER cake makers raised more than £3,000 for Help for Heroes as residents came out to support the charity’s Bake for Heroes campaign.

The bake sale, which nationally has raised more than £850,000 since 2009, was held on Saturday, April 29.

Volunteer baker Sue Morgan helped to organise Colchester’s bake sale which collected £3,672.

Sue said: “It went brilliantly. We had a wonderful time.

“I want to thank the team who were absolutely brilliant on the day, it is because they are such lovely people that people gave us money.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the public in Colchester because if they did not come out to buy them then we would not have been able to raise any money for heroes.”

Sue was inspired to help because of her strong family links to the military.

Her father Jim Sullivan, 95, who is also from Colchester, was in the Army for 27 years, serving with the Royal Green Jackets. Her late mother, Peggy, was in the RAF.

Sue added: “I come from a military background of four generations, so for me it’s payback time.

“I have lived with the Army my whole life and I value everything they do.

“Without them we would not have free speech and the wonderful land we live in.

“I love Bake for Heroes because it gives everyone a chance to do something.

“We are a Garrison town, people know the Army well and know what we are about.” More than 1,000 cakes were sold at the bake sale, provided by a range of businesses.
