VISITORS to Colchester Castle are being given the chance to explore some historical collections in a different light.
The castle will host the Museums at Night event on May 18, with the castle open late to visitors.
It will include a self-guided tour, taking in several stations dotted around the castle and starting with a light display in the Lucas vault.
This display will look at the discovery of fire and how early humans created beautiful paintings in caves across Europe.
Visitors are promised a journey through time, learning about how light and dark have played a role in the development of humanity.
The event will recreate the effect of Roman lamps.
Two scientists from Surrey Nanosystems will be on hand to demonstrate their new material, Vanta Black, and will be available to answer questions and give demonstrations.
Alongside the demonstrations, two torchlit tours will take place at 6.30pm and 8pm, giving visitors the chance to explore the vaults and prisons by torchlight.
Paul Smith, leader of Colchester Council, said: “Being able to open up the castle to this type of evening event is a great way to encourage a different audience into our wonderful castle.
“The Museums Team has worked hard to find fun and exciting ways to make the most of the Castle, and I look forward to an entertaining evening.”
