FIRST there was the Wrong Film Club - now it's time for the Eurovision Wrong Contest.

That's the new event from performer and comedian Lee Ashcroft who will definitely be hoping for 'Douze Points' next weekend when he stages his very own tribute to the world's greatest song contest.

Kitsch, cheesy and ever so over the top, despite whatever happens in the next two years, Eurovision will still be an important part of the country's DNA as much as Fish and Chips and Morris Dancing.

Lee says: "It's really an extension of the Wrong Film Club which I've been running for a while but this time using the Eurovision Song Contest. For a long time I've been thinking Graham Norton doesn't go far enough in his commentary and so we're putting that right."

As with the Film Club where audiences can berate and mock a movie while it's being shown, at the Eurovision Wrong Contest, people will be able to shout out at the songs, except not while they're on.

"Much like the actual programme," Lee adds, "and because people do want to hear the songs, however bad they are, there's no talking while the acts are performing. Other than that it's no holds barred."

As well as the screening of the programme, there will be a homegrown musical performance courtesy of Dingus Khan and Superglu frontman Ben Brown, stand-up sets from Lee and Jo Fletcher-Cross and a performance piece by Norwich-based duo, Odd Comic.

"It's been incredibly difficult to set up," Lee says, "mainly because unlike the films we cannot see the songs in advance in order to write some kind of script on the night. There will be the semi-finals, which for us will be a bit like a dress rehearsal but much like the show itself, who knows what's going to happen on the night."

The Eurovision Wrong Contest is at Firstsite Gallery, Colchester, on May 13 from 6.30pm. Entry is £5 on the door.
