A SOCIAL group unveiled a bench in memory of a community stalwart.

Gordon Dowe died three years ago, after setting up older people's group, the Evergreens.

Initially intended to take in both Greenstead and Highwoods, where Gordon lived, the group became more Greenstead-focussed over the years.

Its two meetings, a social club at Greenstead Community Centre and a lunch club at and the John Payne Hall, in Blackthorn Avenue, regularly attract more than 30 people.

Jean Lay, Evergreens treasurer, said: "We were all very fond of Gordon and we wanted to do something to remember him.

"He left behind a legacy and we intent to keep it going."

She added: "We are blessed to have some amazing volunteers to keep it running, such as Christine Jackson and Josie King.

"There is no way I could do it by myself at all."

The bench, as well as its engraving, is expected to cost about £500.

Some £200 was donated to the group by Julie Young, Colchester councillor for Greenstead, while the group raised about £340.
