A FORMER Plume School student will attempt to climb to Everest’s base camp for Alzheimer’s Research, just months after completing a triathlon and duathlon.

Laura Brown, 29, is taking on the challenges in memory of her two grandmothers, Pearl Lazell and Emma Brown, died from Alzheimer’s and dementia respectively.

The first challenge for Laura is a triathlon in Denmark, on June 10, where she will be representing Team GB.

The triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run.

After that comes the City to Summit duathlon in Scotland, on July 2, where Laura will run 13.1 miles, cycle 112 miles, and then run another 26.2 miles which includes climbing over Ben Nevis.

Rather than a well-earned break after that, training will ramp up a gear as she prepares to climb 17,000ft up Everest in November.

Laura explained why she is putting herself through these challenges: “I turn 30 in January and I wanted a few adventures to mark this point in my life. Once I got the triathlon and duathlon sorted I started thinking about adding a third event to make it really special and that is when I came up with the Everest idea, which is certainly daunting.

“I wanted to use these events to raise money for a charity close to my heart. Alzheimer’s and Dementia have sadly taken the lives of both my nans and have also caused a lot of heartache and sadness to the surrounding family.

“These events are painful, they are tough and they are exhausting, but I think there is also a element of addiction to them, because you get such a buzz when you accomplish it.

“The charity element is also a huge motivator to me personally. On those days when it is hammering down with rain and you want to do anything but train it really gives you that extra kick to go out and do it. It is so much easier to get out there when you feel like you are doing something worthwhile and are making a difference.”

Laura has set herself a target of raising £5,000 for the charities over the course of her events.
