THE slopes of Colchester’s Castle Park will be alive with the sound of music as details have been released of films being shown on the outdoor screen.

Wimbledon matches, popular films and even video games will be beamed out across Colchester’s award-winning park as a popular outdoor screen returns again this year.

The summer screen will go up on Monday July 3 with a schedule which council bosses will appeal to all ages.

It will end with the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday July 16 - a finale which has now been organised for the third year running.

Visitors will be able to relax and watch the tennis for free before the sport action makes way for Pictures in the Park.

Starting on the evening of Friday, July 7 and continuing through the weekend, five hit feature films will be shown.

This event will start with an 1980s-themed evening, with Dirty Dancing screened on Friday.

Saturday July 8 gets musical with sing-a-long films including Jungle Book and The Sound of Music set to be shown.

Sci-fi fans will have a lot to shout about on Sunday, as the latest film in the Star Wars saga, Rogue One, is screened.

Throughout Pictures in the Park a licensed bar, popcorn, ice cream, pizza and many more pop-up food kiosks will add to the party atmosphere.

Food and alcohol will be allowed on site, but alcohol can only be consumed within the screen venue area.

A bar will run throughout the tennis matches from July 10 until July 16.

For the first time, avid gamers can put their skills to the test on the big screen at a free tournament.

From Friday July 14 to Sunday July 16, visitors will be invited to compete at a range of games including Rocket League, Fifa and Street Fighter.

The BIG eGames Tournament, presented by Fragers and Colchester Institute, will run each day from 10am until 1pm.

Colchester Council chiefs are hoping for good weather so crowds can make the most of the long summer evenings.

Tim Young (Lab), deputy leader of Colchester Council, said: “The Summer Screen has become a regular event in Colchester’s summer calendar.

“It’s the perfect way to bring the people of Colchester together to enjoy sport and films within the beautiful setting of the Castle Park.”

Annie Feltham, Colchester councillor responsible for business and leisure, added: “It’s proved to be a popular community event that gives us the opportunity to raise the profile of sport within Colchester.

“It encourages local people and those from further afield to come to the town and enjoy everything we have to offer.”
