A SPORTING event raised more than £1,000 for a charity set up in memory of talented cricketer.

Rob George died aged 21 in December 2013 following a long battle with leukaemia.

His family set up the Rob George Foundation in his name to help young people fighting cancer and their families.

On Saturday, the foundation held its four annual event to promote awareness of the charity and its work at Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club, in Castle Park.

It saw a six-a-side cricket festival, which included teams from Colchester, Chelmsford, Southend, Wanstead, Upminster as well as Essex University and Loughborough University - Rob's alma mater.

Six social sides also fought it out, including Rob's touring team, Souwesters, Colchester Royal Grammar School as well as a scratch side called Norton's Legends.

Visitors also enjoyed a barbecue alongside music and raffles.

The foundation also provides financial support to young people who demonstrate exceptional commitment and ability in sport or the performing arts but who may be held back by their financial situation.
