GENEROUS runners took on their own mini-marathon challenge to raise money for a children’s charity.

Fundraisers laced up their running shoes and tackled a mile each of a relay run.

The NSPCC hosted the event, in South Street, Manningtree, with competitors sprinting one mile to Mistley Towers and back before passing on the baton to the next person.

The run was first held last year to reflect the NSPCC's sponsorship of the London Marathon.

It was supported by the Red Lion pub, which opened at 10am on Friday to offer cakes, teas and coffees to runners and supporters.

Tom West, landlord at the pub, said he is hoping to lend more support to the NSPCC in the future.

He said: “I haven’t run for quite a while so it was a challenge for me.

“It was a really nice morning.

“We had about 26 people there, so one runner for every mile of a marathon.

“The support we had was really good for a Friday morning - we had people having a cup of coffee and cheering them on.

“We provided the tea and coffee, but the runners themselves brought in the cakes.

“The event is all about getting people out and about in Manningtree to be part of our fantastic community spirit in such a great place.”

Organiser Kay Prestney added: "Runners and walkers across three generations, accompanied by a strong canine turn out, completed a mini marathon event along the river from Manningtree to Mistley Towers.

"It proved a popular and fun event and has now become an annual fixture."

A justgiving page started by Mr West has raised £530 for the charity.
