A MAN has been arrested after a smash at a busy junction which left him and two other people hurt.

A Nissan Juke and a Ford Fiesta collided at the junction of Turner Road and the Northern Approach Road in Colchester.

The crash happened at traffic lights but it is unclear what colour these had been at the time.

Adam Gretton, spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said: “We had a call at 12.26pm to reports of a car that had overturned. We sent an ambulance crew and ambulance officer and there was a report of three patients, all of whom were reported to be out of the vehicle.

“The ambulance went to Colchester General Hospital so I can confirm at least one patient was taken there.

“The incident is not believed to be life threatening or serious.”

Police also attended and closed the road resulting in heavy congestion on the nearby Turner Rise retail park and North Station roundabout area.

An Essex Police spokesman confirmed a man has been arrested in connection with the incident and was among those taken to hospital.

Thomas Rowe, who lives close to where it happened, launched an online petition calling for a full review of the junction and safety measures such as speed cameras.

He said: “I use the junction very often. I do see people jumping the lights and it is the same with North Station roundabout, people regularly block the yellow boxes. The only way we are going to stop that happening is if you look to put cameras up.I started the petition to see what the interest is.”

It is second serious crash to have happened there in six months.

In November, an Audi being driven by teenager Owen Coupland, flipped onto its roof and smashed into railings after a collision with a Fiat Punto.

He and three passengers were taken to Colchester General Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Punto was left with a broken arm as well as other injuries.

Coupland, 18, of Mumford Road, West Bergholt, has denied driving without due care and attention and failing to provide a blood sample. He now faces trial on May 8and has been given conditional bail.

  • Mr Rowe is the Conservative candidate for Mile End and Highwoods in next month’s Essex County Council elections. Also standing : Amanda Kirke (Green), Alex Knupffer (Ukip), Anne Turrell (Lib Dem) Michael Wagstaff (Lab).
