GOOD things come to those who wait - just ask Colchester electro, trip hop duo Plaitum.

Matt Canham and Abi Dersiley have been taking their time producing debut album, Constraint, which is released this Friday, but then that's kind of in keeping with the rest of their career so far.

In fact having signed up with a management group while still in their teens, the pair nearly gave up on music altogether to go to university, until one the country's most successful record producers came along.

“Even when we were at the Colchester Sixth Form together,” Matt says, “I don’t think either of us thought the band might come to anything. Then management came along and we thought ‘well we can put off university for a while and see what happens’.”

That was back in 2012 after one of their songs was heard by a friend of the people who run United Management.

“He heard it on BBC 6 Music,” Abi explains, “and then told them they should check us out."

Despite supporting Bloc Party in Manchester, getting one of their songs on a Jimmy Choo advert and playing a successful set at the Latitude Festival the following year, the duo felt it may be time to move on.

Then Paul Epworth, perhaps most famous for co-writing many of Adele’s massive hits, including the Oscar winning Skyfall, came into their lives.

He set up his Wolf Tone record label in 2012 and with just a smattering of acts on his roster he signed Plaitum two years ago.

"The album has taken a while," Abi adds. "Probably about three years in all so there's a few old tracks on there as well as some new ones."

"Because we've still had other jobs," Matt says, "they're been written in our downtime, mainly in our bedroom, which we've then streamlined in the studio."

With their trademark dark brooding beats, the record has been described in some of the music press as a concept album.

"There is a narrative arc to it," Matt admits, "about an explosive relationship but all of the songs are self contained as well. We always wanted it to be pretty dark. We're constantly listening to music from horror films, so some of the songs have definitely come out of that."

Following a European tour supporting Phantogram back in November, following this week's release, the pair will be on their first headline tour across the country taking in cities such as Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds and London.

"We've been getting a few plays on the radio," Abi says, "but we're also seeing our songs on things like Spotify playlists, which has been really satisfying for us, especially when we're listening to it and suddenly one of our tunes comes on."
