• Will this stop moronic drivers?

Thank you very much for publishing my letter about turning right at the traffic island at the top of East Hill, coming through town.

Low and behold, the next day there is a pathetic lump of something lying in the road trying to stop cars turning right.

The thing is it’s covered in tyre marks. Where is Baldrick when you need him?

Ah well, we tried.

Essex County Council has put in an obstruction at the top of Queen Street to stop cars turning right through the pelican crossing on a green light.

It is a problem featured in many recent letters and the big item from the Civic Society in earlier this year.

County councillor Eddie Johnson told me 10 days back they were about to do this - 21 months after I first raised the issue!

  • Balkerne bridge needs markings

The bridge over Balkerne Way was suddenly opened early on Friday evening and this is a picture of my daughter Josefine Backman Juliff, aged nine, crossing the new bridge for the first time.

Gazette:

We have been waiting for this for a long time.

There are no signs on there where the pedestrian should walk and where the cyclists should go. It does not seem to be wide enough.

Anyway, we are very happy the bridge is finally open.

Pia Backman Colchester

It was with joy that I walked across Balkerne Bridge in Colchester this morning until I was passed by two cyclists at close quarters and some speed.

There is no demarcation line on the bridge to indicate which side should be used by pedestrians and which side cyclists.

It is an accident waiting to happen and far more dangerous than the old bridge when cyclists dismounted or were careful.

  • Elephants are a nod to our Roman heritage

Councillor Pat Moore shows an appalling lack of knowledge of Colchester’s history.

When the Emperor Claudius planned his invasion of Britain he is supposed to have bought war elephants, hence the elephant statues in the town.

They are a visual representation of our history.

  • Good to see an MP display real emotion

Whatever our political view we should be united in praise for MP James Cleverly following his poignant speech given to the House of Commons concerning the death of Westminster PC Keith Palmer.

It is good to know our MP is a compassionate and indeed, an emotional man, rarely obvious in politicians.

I sincerely hope the Prime Minister will honour his request for a posthumous award to PC Palmer.
