A CRAZY golf course with holes featuring some of Colchester’s most famous landmarks looks likely to be approved next week.

Attractions like the iconic Jumbo water tower, Colchester Castle, the Roman wall and even the Celtic queen Boudicca could all feature at the proposed adventure golf course which has been put forward by bosses at Playgolf on Bakers Lane, Colchester.

Proposals also include a cave feature, as well as a volcano and two waterfalls and the applicants have held discussions with council officers to determine a suitable height for the attractions.

The adventure golf course would be built on the site’s current car park, with extra spaces created elsewhere.

The plans are scheduled to be discussed by Colchester Council’s planning committee at a meeting on Thursday and officers have recommended the scheme is approved.

In a report prepared ahead of the hearing, officers said: “Following a suggestion by the development team, some references to Colchester’s history was put to the applicant and they were enthusiastic about this.

“This approach is welcome.

“It should set the adventure golf course apart from others and make it more locally specific.

“It will also tie in with the borough’s other tourism offers.

“A condition is suggested to be imposed restricting all structures to be no higher than 2.5m in height.

“This is considered to be acceptable in the context.”

The report continued: “To summarise, this scheme proposed economic tourism and leisure based development via the expansion of an existing well used site.

“The impact it will have on the landscape and highway network is held to be acceptable and therefore the scheme is held to be wholly line with the development plan.

“Therefore, an approval is warranted.”

Concerns have been raised by residents about more development at Playgolf, which already has golf and footgolf courses, a driving range, a gym and conference and wedding facilities, because of the poor state of Bakers Lane.

Suggestions have been made about cutting the speed limit to 30mph and making the route a one way street to cut down on incidents.

But Essex Highways have not posted any objections to the adventure golf scheme.

A previous application for a smaller course at Playgolf was approved in 2015, but was never built.
