I Admit to being a fan of television quiz shows.
I even sit through Only Connect and University Challenge despite having probably only ever answered one question right on each of them about every four programmes.
It's a happy day when I get one right. Even happier when my better read other half fails to get the answer before me.
I am more likely to be able to get the answers on the Chase or Tipping Point where some of the responses people give are destined straight for Private Eye.
You must have to hit just the right note between being clueless and very clever to get on those - if you are too intelligent you will just win everything and that is no fun for producers.
But if you don't know anything at all they will look heartless for putting you on in the first place.
A friend of mine failed to get chosen for Catch Phrase, despite being very clever and charismatic, which further fuelled my theory.
Then there are the shows that clearly don't want anyone to win.
The Code, presented by consumer champion Matt Allwright, for example.
It returned for a second series this week, with a huge jackpot which had rolled over from the end of the last set of shows, and it became immediately obvious it is nigh on impossible to actually win.
The premise is fairly simple - you get three answers and then read the questions - only one of which correctly relates to the answer.
Each time you select the correct statement and answer you choose a number.
Once you have correctly chosen the three numbers in your code you open the safe and take the cash home. Simples.
Well, no, because after a few rounds they stop you being able to look at all three questions and answers.
And if you get far enough you only get to see one of the questions with its answer. It is pointless and I can't see how anyone will ever win other than with a lucky guess.
The BBC clearly thinks this is a clever way of making a quiz show whilst not spending very much money.
But it essentially is setting people up to fail.
I like it when people win and while obviously they can't win all the time, it should probably happen on at least one show a week.
