BRIGHTLINGSEA Regent manager James Webster felt hard work, character and sheer determination were key ingredients in tonight’s 3-1 success against Soham Town Rangers.

The R’s moved six points clear at the top of the Ryman League division north table after two goals from Tom Richardson and an early opener from Billy Hunt gave them victory at a soggy North Road.

However, they had to do it the hard way after the tenth-minute sending-off of skipper and defensive linchpin Matt Cripps.

It left them a man down and facing a mountain to climb, but Regent dug deep to extend their lead over second-placed Maldon and Tiptree.

“We made it tough for ourselves, going down to ten so early on,” said Webster.

“Fair play to the boys, though.

“We could have collapsed at that point but instead took the lead almost straight away, thanks to another good goal from Billy.

“From then on it was important not to camp back.

“When you’re down to ten men, if you sit back you’re just inviting pressure and I was really pleased with the way the boys responded.

“It was always going to be tough.

“Soham are scrapping for their lives but we showed so much character and a different side to our game, that even when the chips are down we’ll stick together and dig in for each other.

“They worked so hard. Every single one of them gave their all and I was very proud.

“It’s not always possible to play amazing football but I always ask the players to give me 100%.

“They certainly did that tonight and it’s something we’ve built our success on over the years.

“If you came into this team and didn’t work hard, you’d be the odd one out. You’d be exposed and embarrassed, because everyone else does.

“We could look back on this as a key result, when everything was against us.

“To put such a shift in when we were down to ten men for so long was amazing.”

Webster was planning to watch video footage of the sending-off but his gut feeling was that the decision was harsh.

“Crippo slipped before getting to their player. He slid on his knees and his momentum on the greasy pitch took him through,” said the Regent boss.

“I thought it was a bit harsh. It wasn’t two-footed and it wasn't over the top.

“He’s not that sort of player. He’s not nasty.

“We’re strong on discipline. It was our first red card of the season and we haven’t had that many yellows either.

“Crippo’s going to be a big loss while he’s suspended, but I’m happy with the squad I’ve got and feel confident we’ve got the strength in depth to cope.”
