A frightened badger has been rescued from a drain after a passer-by spotted him.

They called the RSPCA to the animal which was at the bottom of the 10ft drain in Warley Hill, Warley, on Monday.

RSPCA animal collection officer (ACO) Joe White said: “A woman was walking her dogs in the area when they dragged her over to the opening of the drain.

“We have no idea how long this little guy had been trapped but he was clearly quite distressed.

“I used a grasper pole and had to lay right by the drain and really stretch to reach 10ft down into the chasm to secure him before I could lift him out.

“He was very feisty and after putting him in my carrier and giving him a quick check over for any injuries he appeared well so I decided to release him instead of subjecting him to any more stress. He ran off really fast so obviously knew where he was going!

“A large cover for the drain was lying next to the opening so I dragged it back over the hole to cover it over and prevent any other animals - or walkers - falling in!

“I’d advise anyone who spots an animal in a similar situation to always get in touch with us and not try to rescue the animal themselves as they could end up hurting themselves or cause the animal more stress or injury."

Anyone who spots an animal in distress can report it to the RSPCA’s 24-hour emergency line by calling 0300 1234 999.
