A TOP county councillor has pledged to push Essex Highways to improve roads in a Colchester suburb.

Shrub End borough councillor Pauline Hazell invited Essex County Council deputy leader Kevin Bentley to see pot holes and other road defects in her ward, which she believes are among the worst in the county.

Mrs Hazell said she ensured her fellow Conservative councillor was shown every single road in the area and highlighted the broken kerbstones, numerous deep potholes and serious damage to the carriageways and pavements.

She said: “Everyone in the area is greatly concerned about the condition of the roads here and we all feel like the ‘Land that time Forgot’.

After the visit, Mr Bentley said he would “take up the issues back at County Hall immediately.”

The Conservative county councillor for Stanway and Pyefleet further commented: “Although Essex County Council has invested millions of pounds in road repairs in recent times and many people will have seen some upgrade of roads surrounding Shrub End Estate, I will personally ensure that the defects I saw are reported to the proper highways engineers.”

Colchester MP Will Quince agreed roads in the Shrub End state need “urgent repairs.”

He praised Mr Bentley for visiting the site and Mrs Hazell for her action.

The Conservative MP added: “It is important that local councillors really do stand up for their residents and Pauline is a shining example of this and making a real difference to her community."
