WITH non-league giantkillers Sutton United aiming to take the prize scalp of Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round tonight, we have delved into The Gazette archives to remember Colchester United's most memorable FA Cup moments.

Beating the mighty Leeds

Sutton knocked out Leeds to earn their tie against Arsenal, something which U's fans have experience of. 

In undoubtedly Colchester United's most famous FA Cup result, Ray Crawford netted twice for the Fourth Division U's to earn a staggering 3-2 win over Don Revie's mighty Leeds United side, who were top of the First Division at the time.

The victory earned Colchester a trip to Everton's Goodison Park in the quarter finals, where they bowed out to the toffees.

Scaring Mourinho's Chelsea stars

The U's were on their way to promotion to the Championship when they were handed a trip to Stamford Bridge in 2006.

And they gave moneybags Chelsea a huge scare when Richard Garcia's deflected shot gve them the lead and sent the thousands of travelling fans into raptures.

But a brace for England star Joe Cole helped Chelsea to a 3-1 win.

Premier League stars visit the Weston Homes

Last year's fourth round tie at home to Tottenham Hotspur was the first time Premier League opposition at visited the Weston Homes Community Stadium for an official league game.

The plucky U's picked up two injuries to defenders before half-time and succumbed to the quality of Spurs' attacking play.

But the team were able to grab a consoltation goal in a 4-1 reverse.

Late drama sees U's knocked out by star names

Colchester United were within five minutes of a money-spinning replay at Old Trafford before a late goal broke the team's hearts.

More than 13,000 fans packed into Layer Road for the games against Manchester United in 1979 and looked set to see a famous 0-0 draw against a side featuring Lou Macari, Steve Coppell and Gary Bailey.

But Jimmy Greenhoff's late winner meant the Red Devils progressed.

Dramatic equaliser gives U's a trip to the Baseball Ground

Flying winger Colin Garwood notched an injury time equaliser against Derby County in 1977.

The rams were leading 1-0 in the feisty affair before Garwood scored taking the game to a replay where the plucky U's lost out 1-0
