U’S favourite George Elokobi is hoping to unveil more unique celebrations in the second half of the season after commandeering a supporters drum after the team’s latest victory.

The hulking Colchester United centre half made a beeline to the fans in the South Stand of the West Homes Community Stadium after the 2-0 victory over Cheltenham on Monday and ended up having the ground dancing to his beat by playing a rhythm on the bass drum.

Elokobi, 30, also marked a Boxing Day victory at Luton with a passionate shirtless celebration in front of the Colchester United fans, and attempted to high-five all of the travelling supporters when the team saw off Stevenage on Saturday and has promised there is still more to come.

He said: “I always like to interact with the fans, not just when we win but even when we draw or lose.

“They pay good money to come and watch and to see their favourite football club play and I like to show them my appreciation.

“Sometimes when I am playing I can hear the rhythm and when the drum was presented to me I thought why not give it a go.

“Perhaps in the next home game if the result is right I can do it again or do something else but I think I’ll keep the details to myself for the minute.

“It is fantastic to see the fans smiling and them coming in their numbers.”

The U’s won all of their festive fixtures and have now taken 19 points from the last 21 available in League Two.

Elokobi said the players and staff are focussed on making sure their good run continues.

He said: “Our form is a credit to everyone at the club and we want to just keep working hard and go as far as we can.

“We know nothing is won in January and we need to keep going.”

The U’s fans regular drummer is Ollie Garnett, 17, said he was delighted to let Elokobi takeover and credits Big George’s return to the team alongside midfielder Owen Garvan as the catalyst for the team’s upturn in form.

He said: “At Stevenage he was doing all the high fives and on Monday I stuck the drum out and he wanted to have a go.

“I have been playing it for the last couple of years and it is good, it helps with the atmosphere, especially at home when there are less people drinking and maybe need a bit of encouragement to start singing.

“We take it to all the away grounds but some of them won’t allow it in.

“He wasn’t bad at it and hopefully if we keep winning it might become a regular thing.

“Since him and Garvan came back into the team everything has changed.

“They are two older players who have seen and done it all before in higher leagues and can help the younger players..

“The last seven games have been amazing, we are one of the form teams in the league and hopefully we can keep it up.”
