THE pubs and restaurants of historic Harwich were filled with the sound of Christmas carols as the Harwich Society carried out its annual charity carol singing.

The event, which took place last Thursday, has become a firm favourite amongst those enjoying the festive food and drink within the old town and Christmas songs and carols were sung in 11 venues.

Musical accompaniment was provided by the piano accordion of Sylvia Colley and everyone was happy to join in the carol singing before placing generous donations into the collection tins.

This year’s chosen charity was the Harwich Alzheimer’s Group and £400 was raised.

The event was organised by the Harwich Society’s social group and the evening ended in its traditional manner with mince pies and mulled wine in the home of the Social Group’s chair, Anna Rendell-Knights.

Mrs Rendell-Knights said: “This is an evening that we all look forward to and the response from those in the pubs and restaurants is always very warm and incredibly generous. Once again, it was shown that there is no better place to be at Christmas than our very special town.”
