A MAN has appeared in court charged with the rape and robbery of a 37-year-old woman following an incident in Colchester.
Laurentiu Popa, 21, a building labourer, of Oaks Drive, Colchester, was charged with the two offences on Friday.
He appeared for a preliminary hearing at Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. The charge follows an incident in Lexden Road, Colchester, on Sunday November 27, taking place between 2.30am and 3am.
Popa was denied bail for the charges with magistrates ruling he would be remanded in custody.
He is due to appear in Ipswich Crown Court on January 9 2017, with a provisional trial date set for June 9.
