A POLICE highways chief has criticised a driver who crashed into two police cars after a 25 mile high-speed chase.

Disqualified driver Richard Lyttle was jailed for 16 months by Ipswich Crown Court and banned from driving for five years and eight months.

Lyttle, 58, of The Drive, Clacton, admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, obstructing a police officer and driving without insurance.

The court heard police asked Lyttle to stop on the A140 near Eye, Suffolk. He was pursued by police on the A140, the A14 and then the A12, where he exited at Capel St Mary before rejoining the A12 London-bound where a collision took place between two police vehicles and the Astra.

No-one was injured.

Roads policing inspector David Giles said: “This was a reckless and irresponsible example of dangerous driving, travelling at excessive speeds in a deliberate attempt to evade police.

“Richard Lyttle’s actions could have easily led to serious injury to himself or members of the public.

“The custodial sentence is significant and should send out a strong message to those considering driving in a similar fashion.”
