COLCHESTER'S town crier has officially been named the best dressed in the country.

Robert Needham, of Feedhams Close, Wivenhoe, was given the honour at the National Town Crier Championships in Hastings last weekend and fought off strong competition from his colleagues across the nation.

His award-winning finery is a replica of a Sea Captain uniform from 1815.

The contest was judged on fit, suitability and period style as well as how appropriate it is in relation to the town they represent and the character displayed.

Mr Needham, said he believed the uniform was an ideal representation of the town and the traditional connections with the River Colne.

He said: "Hastings put on a fantastic weekend.

"Not only did they hold the 64th consecutive National Town Crier Championship in the town but they incorporated this with their celebrations to mark 950 years since the Battle of Hastings.

"A day of parades concluded with what is probably the largest bonfire and fireworks display in the south of England.

"I really like representing Colchester at competitions up and down the country.

"However, The National Championships are recognised as the superior competition and awards made there are respected. It's great to be honoured in this way."
