THE future of the popular Colchester Cricket Week could be in doubt after county bosses said they cannot promise an event in 2017.

The annual festival, hosted by Castle Park, is now the only time the Essex County Cricket Board takes home games away from the County Ground, in Chelmsford.

But concerns have been raised after financial losses were made in at least the last two events while the county's welcome promotion to the trimmed eight-team County Championship Division One means there will be one fewer home game in the 2017 season.

Bosses have also admitted fewer chairs were set out during this year's four-day match against Surrey in a bid to cut costs.

Sir Bob Russell, patron of Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club, said: "I am concerned that Essex might not be coming back here next year.

"There are fewer teams now in the first division, where Essex deserve to be, and if you are the bean counter at Essex Cricket Club, the chances of giving up one fixture to go elsewhere are slim and economically it makes sense to stay in Chelmsford."

Sir Bob was speaking at the launch of a campaign to raise £450,000 to redevelop the facilities at the Castle Park ground.

His concerns were echoed by club president Philip George.

He said: "It is fair to say the festival has been under pressure for some years.

"This year, you will have seen fewer chairs and stands were used for the event.

"That was to cut the amount being spent.

"Fortunately, the players love to play here and the members love to come and watch.

"Fortunately it is not just about money, but it is a little about money."

He added: "I am optimistic we will have [the festival] at least for one more year."

An Essex County Cricket Board spokesman said: "Discussions are still ongoing with regards to the future of the Colchester Festival in 2017.

"A decision cannot be made until the fixtures for next year have been released.

"We will continue to discuss with the respective parties and make an announcement when discussions have concluded."

Southend Cricket Festival was axed by the county board in 2011.
