CAMPAIGNERS are calling for a historic pub in the centre of Manningtree to be saved from being turned into a home.

The White Hart, in High Street, closed its doors earlier this month.

Plans have now been submitted to turn the premises into a residential property.

Since the closure, residents have come forward to oppose the owner’s plans, citing the importance of keeping the street as a commercial space.

Sue Brown, who owns Chez Sue hair salon, said it would be a “disaster” for the town if the pub was converted into a home.

“We have a covenant for the high street that all lower ground properties should be kept as retail,” she said.

“If one retail outlet is allowed to change we will end up losing our high street.

“I object very strongly to this change of use.

“I own a hairdressing salon in the town, which I have had for over 17 years and I have seen many changes, but if this is allowed to happen it will be a disaster.”

The Tendring branch of Campaign for Real Ale will apply for the building to be registered as an Asset of Community Value in a bid to retain it as a pub and a ‘Save the White Hart’ social media page has also been set up.

Manningtree Town Council and Mistley Town Council have both objected to the plans, however Manningtree mayor Mark Morsley voiced his support.

“If it was converted into a house all the historic features would be preserved,” he said.

Tom Newman, owner of the pub, said: “The company which owns the pub has leased it on four or five occasions since 2002 at a low rent.

“Unfortunately, none of the tenants could make a living from the available trade.

“There is little or no interest during the week.

"Weekend trade is slightly better, but I have still lost money.

“I have been attempting to sell the pub for the last 18 months or more at a realistic price with highly-reputable agents.

“There has been no interest at all.”

Residents have until Tuesday to submit their comments on the plans to Tendring Council.
