BATTERED goalposts are set to be replaced after a campaigning mum won a competition.

Vanessa Lucas and her husband Kevin who serves as a warrant officer, entered a picture of their twin sons Sam and Lewis on Montgomery Park, Colchester, in an online competition run by sports equipment country Harrod UK which was looking to find the country’s saddest goalposts.

Their entry was named as the winner for Essex and the new goals will be installed with a special match on Thursday kicking off at 3.30pm pitting an Army team against military housing provider Carillion Amey because of the proximity to Colchester’s army barracks.

Cash raised at the match, and money from a non-uniform day at Montgomery Infant’s school will be split between the Sick Children’s Trust and military charity SSAFA.

Mrs Lucas said: “We have been waiting for Carillion Amey to install the posts and finally after completing some ground works they have just been installed.

“Hopefully everyone will come down and support this fabulous charity.

“It’s really all about getting a safe playing area for the older children within the community and raising funds for worthwhile charities.”
