COUNCIL bosses are considering using a dog banning order to combat pet fouling on a Colchester sportsground.

Residents will have two weeks to have their say on the introduction of a Public Space Protection Order to Mill Road Sports Ground - home to Colchester Rugby Club

The proposal has been put forward after complaints were made to the council about the amount of dog poo on the playing surfaces at the sports ground which has not been picked up by pet owners.

A consultation has since been carried out and Colchester Council says the majority of residents are backing the order.

Annie Feltham, Colchester councillor responsible for leisure said: "We have listened to local residents and users of the sports ground and feel this Public Space Protection Order is the appropriate next step.

"It is designed to ensure we have the powers to take action and fine the minority of people who cause misery to residents enjoying this fantastic open space."

The order would:

- exclude dogs from the pitch area of the sports ground

- ensure dogs are kept on a lead on all non-pitch areas

- allow dog owners who do not pick up after their pet to be punished

Residents can have their say on the plans until 5pm on Thursday, September 15.
