AN ARMED partygoer could be jailed after charging along Queen Street swinging a metal baton around his head and trying to attack people.

Bradley Juniper attempted to assault a gang of six men in Colchester but was disarmed by a doorman after being chucked out of the bar.

His one night only rampage has been transferred to Ipswich Crown Court for sentence after magistrates decided their powers, of up to six months in prison, may not be sufficient.

Colette Harper, prosecuting, said: "It was 3.50am on May 30.

"CCTV from town centre security cameras show a man swinging around what appears to be a baton like an extendable asp.

"The defendant had been ejected from Fashion Cafe.

"He can be seen with an object in his trouser's waistband."

The court was told Juniper, 20, of Princess Drive, Colchester, decided to arm himself before his night out in the town, despite never having been in trouble before.

Ms Harper added: "He was swinging it around his head.

"He then ushers five or six males around a corner.

"He appears to be goading the group."

The group tried to defend itself against the baton frenzy by kicking out at the defendant.

Ms Harper continued: "He waves the baton around in an apparent attempt to try and strike the males.

"A door supervisor takes the baton off him, it was an extendable metal baton."

Juniper admitted possessing an offensive weapon in a public place when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He also admitted using threatening behaviour with into to cause fear of unlawful violence.

Sending him to the higher court to be sentenced chairman of the bench Jacky Froggatt said: "It took place in the early hours of the morning, around groups of young people.

"The baton was clearly being waved in a menacing manner and there is evidence of goading taking place."

He was released on bail to be sentenced on August 15.
